There's a reason the preview only shows a couple tiny squares of grass. When you try to make slightly larger squares with anymore than a few hundred blades of grass, or make more than a handful of the same small squares, the fps drops to single digits. Hi, yes I am aware of the low frame rate when going above a certain amount of objects, that was due to collisions running constantly. Update V0.5 will have addressed most of these issues, that being said, GM requires a lot of processing power when rendering a lot of objects with each running their own code. Using small amounts of rendered objects is ideally the best solution.
