Simple grid based water. Simple and intuitive to use, the water is based off the water shown in games such as terraria and starbound. The water cells in this system are individual objects, and only only require 2 scripts to work (1 on create, and one in step). Water has an adjustable update rate, as this system is not optimized for big rooms and large amounts of water. It's crucial the water sprite you use is animated like the one used by default.
For those after proper water to use in open world side scrollers I would look into a tile based alternative, or something else though these are bound to be considerably more complicated :) This is more suitable for games needing smaller amounts of water, with worlds being divided up into smaller rooms.
