Excellent script!

Dear Killer I love your work, there is a little semi-bug: if I change it to emit to a particular coordinates instead of calling object's x and y, and try to call it twice within the same object, the trail will zig-zag between coordinate that I pass. So in order to call 2 or more trail connected to the same object you need to create special objects following the one that needs trail so that each one of them emits its own trail

Great script

Hi, great script. I was just wondering. Is there a way to force trail follow the object at an angle? (Objects x coordinate isn't changing. It's going just up and down, but i would like it to look like it's moving... Trail would be following the object, but it would move by the x axis as well to give it a sense of movement).

nice stuff

Would you please write what exactly you fixed in new versions? Because when someone use modified version, its hard to look for differences.

Very very good but its missing one thing

I cant find any way to adjust how often the texture repeats. Changing the width and/or height of the trail texture doesn't afftect it and the default repeat is too squished.

Cannot make it work

I'm really interested in this script. However, every time I run the room containing obj_trail1 it gives me this mistake bellow. I cannot make it start.

FATAL ERROR in
action number 1
of Draw Event
for object obj_trail1:

Variable obj_trail1.slim(100008, -2147483648) not set before reading it.
at gml_Object_obj_trail1_DrawEvent_1 (line 2) - draw_trail(16,16,color,-1,slim,1);

Works a charm!

Easy to set up - all I needed was a couple of the included scripts and it was well-documented in the PDF file.

Brilliant!

Simple and perfect to use, a bit buggy with small screen sizes and fastest objects, but no problem if you know how to program some basic things like step and draw events. :)

Great :)

Works brilliant :) Thanks for this.
Seems to be rather taxing on the fps' if there are too many on the screen at a time, but if used with limit, so awesome :)

Thank you i love it

But is there anyway to draw the trail permanent in one direction without the player moving.
Like for a endless runner where the object always stays at the same position but only the background moves

Simple and Effective

Good trail effect, very easy to use and understand. At first using the simple method was giving me issues but then after utilizing the extended code I was able to make it work. One thing however, I cannot seem to destroy the trail. Whenever I do it gives me an error. Hopefully I don't get a memory leak.....

Errors when I run the room

when i run the room and click somewhere I get the error:

FATAL ERROR in
action number 1
of Draw Event
for object obj_trail2:

Does something else need to be set up?

Great way to learn a different method.

I've avoided using primitives for a while because I didn't fully understand. This code has helped me grasp them that much better.

Great job!

Also Strange graphic error

Just like Brennan mentioned, whenever I draw multiple instances of a sprite with a trail behind it, strange tearing/stretching happens in random places over the screen. If I can figure out how to prevent that, great tool and saves lot's of time making one from scratch.

Logo

Killer (Publisher) 29 March 2015

While I'm aware that some people have this issue, I have tried using both methods to create the trail effect, at the same time, with several instances, both with and without textures, and I'm yet to see tearing or stretching at any point.

I'll update this asset with an example, in it you'll be able to create several instances drawing their own trail, please download it and test it, if it works as intended, by which I mean there is no tearing or deformations of any kind, then some of the code on your project must be the cause of the tearing as an unintended reaction to the effect.

If indeed the deformations occur while testing the example, them I'm afraid we would be dealing with a compatibility issue, and there is not much I can do about that.

Strange graphic error

Every time I trail_init other sprites on the screen will become disorted and stretched for a frame or so, I'm not sure if theres something wrong with my gpu or if its something wrong with the script.

Everything else is fine to me

This is a cool effect BUT...

1) There is some typo and declaration errors of function, by example: the manual shipped in indicates that a trail_calculate() function exists in the asset, but, if we look at scripts in the extension, we can see that this function is in reality called calculate_trail() and not trail_calculate().

2) In the script trail_draw_ext() there is some comments typo errors. Like comments refers to trail_draw() and not to trail_draw_ext().

3) Well, I have an object that I want USE as visible when trail occur, if I set the trail effect in my DRAW event of my object, it then replace my object with the trail. How I can set my object be visible EVEN when trail occur? (like you showed on your Details screenshots.. ?

4) It will be amazing if we are able to set the effect in ANY events instead only DRAW events.

5) It will be also useful if you provide a better manual as explanations and why not some projects examples.

6) A HUGE THANKS FOR THIS FREE ASSET ! REALLY :)

Thanks by advance.

Yeah, sorry about the manual and comment mistakes, and for not fixing it and answer you sooner, another user actually email me about it recently which is how I got to notice it... sorry to say it but i haven't been putting a lot of attention to the marketplace.

As for your other points, it's pretty much impossible to use this effect without putting it in a draw event, it's a drawn effect after all, it would be possible to make it so the scripts create a new instance of a previously defined object to draw the effect, but that would just over complicate an effect as simple as this one.

To draw both the effect and the sprite of the object simply add draw_self() to the draw event of the object drawing the trail.

I may create a simple example of how to use the scripts, it will have to wait to the next few days though.

Looks good, now optimize it!

I have two suggestions.
1 - Make an option for running the array calculations separately from the draw event. It is written in the GMS manual to avoid using the draw event for anything that is not a drawing function.
2 - try using ds_grids instead of arrays as they are supposed to be faster.

Part of what I like about this script is its ease of use, you simply have to put it in the Draw event and set its arguments, and that it’s all.

By separating it into calculating and drawing, and using Grids instead of arrays, that one single script would have to be separated into 4: creating the variable that the grid will use, calculating the trail, drawing the trail and then deleting the grid when the trail is no longer needed to prevent memory leaks.

It may not seem like much, but since this script was thought for beginners, I would rather it remains as simple as possible.

Of course instead of replacing the current script I can add other scripts to the asset that do things the way you suggest, and let people decide which they would rather use. Although I must confess I’m not too thrilled about making scripts with one single line of code.

Simple and effective

While it may not seem like much, drawing a decent trail that looks good and also follows the movements in a natural way can be a tricky thing to create. Well, not any more thanks to this fantastic package. Easy to use, nicely scripted, customisable and very effective.

Definitely recommended!
