I created a simple cel shading rotation effect quite some time ago that allows objects to rotate in a 2.5D manner.
This demo showcases the effect applied to a small plane.
The effect is achieved using some simple maths and carefully designed sprites.
Feel free to experiment with the effect, it can be used on much more than just planes.
